We’re happy to present this great trip to Northern California. You’ll be playing a World Top-10 Golf Course, in addition to some of the most scenic golf courses anywhere. You will start by travelling south for a stop in the Santa Clara Valley, before a three night stay in one of the best corners of golf in the world, the Monterey Peninsula. You’ll finish the trip with a fun night out in San Francisco, before making your way back home.
Day 1 – Arrival & Pasatiempo
Welcome to California!
This morning you’ll make your way south away from San Francisco, starting the day with a 1hr30 drive before playing a round at the stellar Pasatiempo Golf Club near Santa Cruz.
After the round, you’ll make your way the remaining 1hr drive to your home for the first night of the trip, the fantastic Rosewood CordeValle. Settle in, clean up, and enjoy the first night dinner at the property.

Pasatiempo Golf Club

The Spanish word “pasatiempo” is translated as “hobby” or “pastime” or a “relaxed passage of time.” Over the years, golfers have argued that there are few places more breathtaking and challenging than the course named Pasatiempo built by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, and the expert horsewoman and golfer, Marion Hollins.
What gives the course its dramatic and unique contours are its setting amongst the rolling southern hills near Monterey Bay. The front nine, which largely involves straight fairways with heavily forested surrounds, is certainly more relaxed and simple than the back nine. The final half of the course includes a myriad of ravines breaking up the fairways and greens that provide a significant challenge to even the experienced player.
Pasatiempo is widely known as one of the best public-access courses in the USA, and makes for an immensely enjoyable and entertaining opening round. Welcome to golf in California.

Day 3 – Spanish Bay
Today, we’ve organized a day essentially free of commuting. You’ll have time for a relaxing morning before making your way over to the 1st tee at the Links at Spanish Bay, the course connected to your accommodation.
The use of a golf cart is included for each of your three rounds on the Monterey Peninsula (Spanish Bay, Spyglass and Pebble) should you wish you drive instead of walk the course.
After the round, you’ll have an afternoon to relax. For dinner tonight, you’ll head into the beautiful small beach city of Carmel By The Sea for a table at the interesting and innovative Mexican joint Cultura Comida y Bebida (just ‘Cultura’ for short). It’s about a 15-minute drive from the Inn at Spanish Bay to the restaurant in Carmel.

Links at Spanish Bay

Meandering among sweeping sand dunes along 17-Mile Drive, The Links at Spanish Bay unveils some spectacular seaside views. The rolling fairways flow through and around the gorgeous dunescape, briefly weaving between towering Monterey Pines, before returning to the white sand of Spanish Bay Beach for a thrilling finish along the wind-swept coast.
Another Robert Trent Jones Jr. design which occupies the oceanfront site of a former sand mine, the Links at Spanish Bay before the fourth 18-hole course added to the portfolio of Pebble Beach Resorts.
A twilight round here is punctuated by the tunes of the famed Spanish Bay bagpiper, who puts the course to bed every evening. It’s a glorious and unique site to see (and of course hear) as you’re walking off of the 18th green.
Spanish Bay is ranked among the best public courses in the state and the country, and annually hosts the pros during the TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational. And as a bonus, you’ll be able to walk to the first tee.

Day 4 – Spyglass Hill
This morning we suggest playing Spyglass Hill, giving you space for a relaxing morning without compromising your post-round, pre-dinner beverage(s), and/or nap.
For dinner tonight, something a bit different and more casual. You’ll head into the small city of Pacific Grove to eat and drink at Alvarado Street Brewery. The main Brewery & Grill seats 140 people in a cavernous industrial space, and in the back is a chic outdoor beer garden, slightly shaded by latticework and greenery. Given that it’s a Friday night, it should have a great atmosphere.

Spyglass Hill Golf Course
17-Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, CA
If Pebble Beach is the Greatest Meeting of Land and Sea, then perhaps Spyglass Hill should be dubbed the Greatest Meeting of Sand and Trees. The defining takeaway at Spyglass Hill is how starkly the first five holes juxtapose the rest of your round. Sweeping ocean views with holes darting though a daring dunescape give way to the understated natural beauty and brawn of the Del Monte Forest.
Originally called Pebble Beach Pines Golf Club, Spyglass is known as the most difficult of the Pebble Beach Resorts courses. Pine Valley-by-the-Sea meets Augusta National, as Sports Illustrated eloquently described it.
As an annual co-host of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, as well as a stroke-play venue for a pair of U.S. Amateur Championships (1999 and 2018), Spyglass Hill’s championship pedigree has been validated by the game’s very best.

Day 5 – Pebble Beach
Today you’ll walk and play where, just five months ago, the best golfers in the world competed (and Gary Woodland, somewhat surprisingly, emerged victorious). The host of the 2019 U.S. Open (it’s sixth time hosting the tournament), it’s a special experience playing Pebble Beach. We’ve requested two forecaddies (one per foursome) for your round, which cost $47.50 per golfer and can be paid upon check-in for the round. The gratuity (completely optional of course, though we recommend $20-$40/bag depending on level of service) can be paid directly to the forecaddie in cash.
After the round, how lunch at The Bench, a casual but sophisticated restaurant the overlooks the 18th hole that you’ll have just played at Pebble Beach. We will request a window-side seat for you. (The best seats, weather permitting, will be on the patio, but these couldn’t be reserved, so if it’s nice out you should request a seat there upon arrival). If you have some time before you reservation, you can have a quick beer at the Tap Room, or jet into the Pebble Beach pro shop.
After your time at The Bench, make your way the 1hr30 drive back towards San Francisco. After you’ve checked into the Hotel Zetta and got yourselves ready, you’re a short cab ride from the Chase Centre, where you’ll catch the Golden State Warriors face Lebron James and the LA Lakers.

Pebble Beach

Ah, Pebble Beach Golf Links… unanimously rated the No. 1 Public Course in the Country. A global top-15 track. Always special.
Pebble Beach hosted its sixth U.S. Open in 2019, which more than any other course over the last 50 years. Future championships include a first U.S. Women’s Open in 2023, and a seventh U.S. Open in 2027. Every February, the PGA TOUR visits for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a tradition that began in 1947.
As Jack Nicklaus, someone who you could say has seen a few golf courses in his days, once famously stated that “if I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play at Pebble Beach. I loved this course from the first time I saw it. It’s possibly the best in the world.”

Taking in a Game
For your last night on the West Coast, we recommend taking in a game. The options in the Bay Area are fantastic right now. If the timing worked out, you could catch the Splash Brothers at the brand new, state of the art Chase Centre in downtown San Francisco. Or you could see last years Superbowl finalists at Levi’s Stadium. OR you could catch a ball game, seeing the Giants at Oracle Park.
As a final alternative for the Canadians (and general hockey fans) the SAP Centre in downtown San José, where the Sharks play, is a great place to catch a game and have a last night out.
