The Best of Portugal

Depart home and fly to Portugal. Safe travels!

Day 1 – Arrive in Lisbon

Welcome to Portugal!

You will be met at the Lisbon airport and taken by private transfer immediately to your hotel, Penha Longa Hotel. Golf is not planned this day, yet you are at a golf resort with 27 holes, so for those wanting to hit some balls on the range or play a practice round that is an option.

Your Hotel:

Penha Longa Hotel

Penha Longa Resort is nestled in the Sintra-Cascais National Park near the Estoril Coast, just 20-25 minutes from the Lisbon Portela Airport.
A secluded retreat in the countryside outside of Lisbon with a sprawling palazzo-style estate built around an historic 14th century monastery, Penha Longa Resort has been a retreat for the royal family of Portugal for years, and offers guests the same stately hospitality. Legendary Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the two-onsite golf courses.
You have your choice of the lead in Forest View rooms, Resort View (same size different view), a Premium room or a suite. You can see rooms
here.
At the end of your day, enjoy dinner at one of the resorts many restaurants: delectable sushi at Midori, traditional Portuguese cuisine at Aqua Restaurant and Pool Bar, classic Italian at Il Mercato, or the Two Star Michelin Starred Arola, where you might want the Chef’s special Table Experience menu.

Day 2 – Oitavos Dunes

This morning you will start your day with a casual breakfast from the beautiful buffet at the resort. We have a late morning tee time booked for at Oitavos Dunes, a short 20mn drive down to the southern coast.

Oitavos Dunes

Designed by Arthur Hills, he carefully crafted Oitavos Dunes, working with the beautiful natural site overlooking the Atlantic Ocean to create a world-class Natural Links Golf course.
Oitavos Dunes is ranked 68
th in the Golf Magazine World rankings, significantly ahead of Valderrama. Like Valderrama, you will play it twice this week. It will be interesting to hear how you compare the two courses.

After your round of golf, you will be taken back to the hotel to freshen up before driving through Cascals and the Estoril Coast to Oeiras. This afternoon you will board a 39 ft. sailboat set to navigate en route to the city Lisbon.
Arriving in Lisbon, your driver and tour guide will show you the beautiful Belém (civil parish) section, connected with the golden period of the Portuguese Maritime Discoveries. Later, Dinner will be at the Belcanto Restaurant, awarded with a Michelin Star, where we have booked you a table for dinner. After dinner, you will be driven back to your hotel.

Day 3 – Penha Longa

After your breakfast, you don’t have to worry about travelling far as we have arranged a tee time for you at Penha Longa’s own golf course.

In the afternoon, your driver and tour guide will be waiting to take you to Lisbon, where you will have a private walking tour. See the capital of Portugal, and learn about its essential location at the mouth of the Tagus River and from where the Portuguese boats set sail overseas in the 15th and 16th centuries towards East.
After walking around the city, our driver will pick you up to take you to the Tágide Restaurant for dinner at their wine bar.

Penha Longa

There are two courses at Penha Longa, the true championship standard Atlântico, and the excellent 9-hole Mosteiro. The Atlântico, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, opened in 1992 and received such acclaim that it played host to the Portuguese Open in the past. The course winds its way up and down the hills around the south side of the clubhouse providing some of the most amazing views of the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais and the blue waters of the Atlantic.  The Atlântico is challenging on a still day, but when the wind blows across the mountains, the course becomes a real test and even the best struggle. So much so, that winner of the 1999 Estoril Open, Jean-Francois Remesy, was the only player under par, and he only managed to break par by two shots. Unlike many courses in Europe, there isn’t a single weak hole on the Atlântico course and certain holes will stick in your mind, bringing great joy and relief from a par or even bogey. The 16th is the hardest hole on the course and requires a long drive across a valley and a solid up hill approach shot to a narrow green.

Day 4 – Praia d’el Rey

This morning you will be heading north to the rather new Praia d’el Rey and the newer cousin, West Cliffs. It makes sense to play 36 today. Set among extensive pine forests and undulating dunes, with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlengas Islands beyond.

Praia d’el Rey

Located 1hr 30mns from the hotel, the 18-hole golf course was designed by the Spanish-based American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson. Deep bunkers, sloping greens and sandy dunes contrast sharply with the lush fairways, making it the complete golfing challenge.
After finishing your game, you will be driven to Quinta de Sant’Ana for a visit to the wine estate, wine tasting and lunch. This family-owned wine estate, with several centuries of existence,  represents the century-old tradition of making wine in Portugal. After lunch, you will visit Sintra, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for the great beauty of its nature and architecture, with fairy tale palaces and lush vegetation.

West Cliffs
Located an hour’s drive north of Lisbon on Portugal’s spectacular Silver Coast, West Cliffs is a Cynthia Dye design that first opened its doors to the golfing public in the summer of 2017. Offering sweeping views of the Atlantic, Berlengas Islands and Óbidos Lagoon, this dramatic seaside layout has been laid out within a massive 200-hectare property consisting of rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation.

Dye and her construction team worked closely with local government agencies to ensure minimum disruption to the environment, creating a well-balanced and sustainable links in a highly attractive location where it fits seamlessly into its natural surroundings.

The architect, niece of legendary golf architect Pete Dye, said: “With the Atlantic visible from every hole, West Cliffs is the most natural golf course site imaginable. One of the most impressive characteristics of the course is just how anchored it is to the native coastal environment.”The terrain at West Cliffs is amazing. On the vast majority of the holes, it was only necessary to site the green complexes with a bit of shaping and then define the limits of grassing. For the most part, the course was already there waiting for us.”

Day 5 – Troia

Leaving your hotel in the morning, our driver and guide will take you across the Tagus River to the south bank at Setubal, where you will take a short ferry across to the Troia Peninsula. On the tre

Troia

Troia is a short shot maker’s course among white sand dunes, pine forests to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the West.
After you 18 holes, your driver and guide will take you to a great seafood restaurant on the nearby sandy beach, famous for its fresh fish and seaside tables. After a nice lunch on the beach, we will take you back to the hotel.

Dinner will be at the hotel.

Day 6 – Oitavos Dunes

Today you will play your second round at the Oitavos Dunes Golf Course. After your morning round of golf, you will driven back to your hotel where you can relax the rest of the day, taking full advantage of the amenities Penha Longa Resort offers.
For dinner, since this is the final day, we suggest you dine at the beautiful Michelin Starred, Fortaleza do Guincho, located down the hill from the resort hanging over the Atlantic Ocean.
